Action underway at 2010 U.S. Olympic Team Trials
(BROOMFIELD, Colo.) - More than 400 fans enjoyed the opening draw of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Team Trials Saturday afternoon at the Broomfield Event Center.
Jumping out to 1-0 starts were teams skipped by Erika Brown (Oakville, Ontario), Cassie Potter (Minneapolis), Debbie McCormick (Rio, Wis.), Patti Lank (Lewiston, N.Y.) and Amy Wright (Duluth, Minn.).
Brown's team went down to the final shot with the veteran skip making a tapback to score two points to defeat Norma O'Leary's team, 8-7.
"I had just thrown it so I was trying to throw it the same way again," Brown said about her final shot for the win. "It was a back and forth game... and we definitely didn't want to go to an extra end."
Potter defeated Cristin Clark's team from Seattle, 11-6, after sealing the game with four points in the ninth end. McCormick had an up-and-down game against Charrissa Lin (New Haven, Conn.) but the defending champions held on for the 10-6 win. McCormick had a chance for five or six points in the sixth end but jammed her stone on a takeout attempt and gave up a steal of one instead. She'd make up for it in the seventh though with five points to set the tone.
"It took off a bit at the end... so that was a bummer," McCormick said about her miss in the sixth. "We had a lot of opportunities. It was fun to be out there and have a decent crowd watching."
Lank's team needed a measure on the final stone to defeat Gillian Gervais (Eagan, Minn.), 9-7, after rolling almost too much.
"We got bit a little by playing one side of the ice more than the other," said Team Lank second Ann Swisshelm (Chicago). "They made great shots though."
Wright and Aileen Sormunen (Duluth, Minn.) went down to the final stone as well with the veteran Wright making a takeout and scoring two points for the 5-4 win.
The men's action gets underway at 8 tonight. Live scoring from the event will be available at www.usacurl.org/curlingrocks in the scoreboard.
