About Joe Calabrese:

Curls out of: Rochester  Curling Club

In his own words:

Curling is such a team game and I love it for the chance to work with other people who care about setting and achieving goals, not matter what level of the game I'm playing.
The people you get to meet and play in this game are some of the best people in the world.

Who/What introduced you to Curling?
I got started in curling in Rochester after winning an online auction ($11 for 5 weeks) and got addicted to the game after an experienced skip delivered us to a league title.  After a couple of years in Rochester, my family moved to Wisconsin where I joined the Milwaukee and Wauwatosa Curling Clubs  for five years.  I returned to Rochester in 2009 and am really enjoying the fun we have as a team and the energy that I see in our club since the Olympics.

Who was your favourite athlete growing up?
I grew up loving Rickey Henderson.  What a talent!  I'm a bigger football fan now and am waiting for the day whn I can find a great Buffalo Bill to cheer for again.  My favorite all time Bill is Frank Reich, the “Architect of the Comeback”.

What other sports do you play?
Golf

Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions?
Lately I've been into youtube mashup videos.  I'm a big fan of DJ Steve Porter.

What is your career highlight to date?
The thing that has meant the most to me is winning our men's league title last year.  Playing with a good group of guys who are terrific curlers made that the most memorable.  The set of obstacles we had to overcome to do it was substantial.

What is one shot you would like to try one more time?
One year is playdowns I was playing Rich Ruohonen and came up lame with a very painful leg cramp in the middle of a shot.  While I flopped around on the ice, it looked like I had gotten shot in the leg.  I'd love to have that one back.  It was a close game and the shot really hurt our chances.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
“They can't score if their rock isn't in play.”  My vice says that to me all the time.

What is your favourite sport other then curling?
Pro Football

What is one thing you’d like to do before you die?
Play golf at Pebble Beach.

What sporting event would you most like to attend?
Superbowl

Favourite Bands/Music?   Television Shows?
TV - Lost, Walking Dead, Wipeout

What is your favourite Movie(s)?
Dodgeball – whenever it comes on I have to watch it.  I don't understand why it never won an Oscar.

Who was most influential in your curling development?
My first skip was Ken Wood, a veteran playdown curler in the GNCC.  Truly one of the best people in the sport.

Where would you like to spend a week’s vacation?
Disney World with my wife and son.

What hobbies do you have?
Playing with my son, walking my dog.

What kind of Training Regimen do you follow?
I run and work with a mental trainer.  I watch a lot of curling on video and read a lot about the game.

Other Olympic sport you’d like to try?
I'd love to try luge but I don't think I'd look good in the suit.

Who is your greatest competitor?  Rival?
My biggest rival is probably my vice, Mike Mengel.  We have been friends for more than 20 years and we compete at everything – including Curling.  Being on the same team is great because we challenge each other to play our best.
