FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 19, 2010 2010 World Seniors and Mixed Doubles underway in Russia (STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - All members of Team USA have now arrived safely in Russia after countless air traffic delays caused by the volcano eruption in Iceland and its subsequent ash cloud. Competition for the 2010 World Senior Championships and 2010 World Mixed Doubles Championship got underway Sunday as scheduled at the Ural Lightning Ice Palace but several early games were postponed as team members had not yet arrived in the remote city of Chelyabinsk, located a few hours north of the Kazakhstan border in southwest Russia. The last team member to arrive was Mixed Doubles member Mike Calcagno of Seattle, who was delayed coming out of Houston after a business trip. Calcagno teamed up with Sharon Vukich (Seattle) to easily win their first match this morning, 12-2 over Slovakia's team of Gabriela Kajanova and Milan Kajan. Team USA's Sunday matches with Russia and Latvia will be re-scheduled. The Americans opened up with five points (six is the maximum per end in mixed doubles play) and stole back-to-back ends to build a 9-0 lead that Slovakia was unable to overcome. In senior play, both American teams began play as scheduled. Paul Pustovar led the American men to a lopsided 13-0 win over host Russia's Aleksander Kolesnikov rink. Pustovar (Hibbing, Minn.) and teammates Brian Simonson (Hibbing, Minn.), Tom Harms (Pengilly, Minn.), Don Mohawk (Nashwauk, Minn.) and Dale Gibbs (Woodbury, Minn.) never had the last-rock advantage, stealing six straight ends before the Russians conceded. Vukich (Seattle) also led her team in senior women's action - a 7-5 loss to Switzerland's Renate Nedkoff rink. Vukich and teammates Susan Curtis (Rogers, Ark.), Mary Colacchio (Falmouth, Mass.), Betty Kozai (Seattle) and Dani Thibodeaux (Kirkland, Wash.) quickly fell behind to the Swiss ladies after giving up a steal of two in the third end. They'd close the gap to 4-3 after a steal of one in the fifth but couldn't hold off last year's silver medalists in the eventual loss. Games in both events are eight ends in length.
