About Tracy Sachtjen:
Curls out of: Lodi Curling Club, Lodi, Wis., and
Madison Curling Club, Madison, Wis.
Tracy is a member of the first U.S. women's curling team to win a gold medal at
Worlds. Playing lead for Debbie McCormick's team, USA defeated Canada, 5-3, to
win the 2003 World Curling Championships in Winnipeg, Canada.
Curling start:
Tracy grew up with curling in her life, although she confesses to not having liked the
sport at first. Her parents curled, but not competitively, although they did go to many
recreational bonspiels. Tracy was born while her father was away at a bonspiel. She
developed a love for curling while attending Lodi High School and made the varsity team
her first week out. She lettered as a freshman, and quickly became skip of the
senior-laden team. Tracy guided this high school team to the title in the first U.S.
Junior Women's National Championship, in 1987. (There was not a world competition yet that
year.) Tracy took time off from curling from 1989-92 for work reasons. She returned to the
ice for the 1992-93 season and helped her team placed third in the U.S. Women's Nationals.
Tracy took another break from curling from 1993-96 to have her first child. She picked up
where she left off in the fall of 1996, and won her first U.S. Women's National
Championship the same season.
In her own words: The reason why I love curling so much is that it is
such an intriguing mental game and it is a very competitive sport.
Hobbies: Swimming, weight training, golf, running, biking, spending time with
my family, and volunteering for community organizations.
Curling goals: "To win an Olympic gold medal."
