Curls out of: Houston Curling Club
Curling start: "My first exposure to curling was
during the 1998 Nagano Olympics. My high school teacher was able to contact
Mike Peplinski (who was from my hometown and on the 1998 Olympic team) and
was able to arrange a field trip to the Eau Claire Curling Club to do some
curling and examine the physics of curling. We followed the Olympics quite
closely that winter. The exposure made me want to take a look at curling
more seriously so I attended the open house that fall at the Eau Claire
club. Mike was there and actually offered to let my friend and I curl on his
team if we wanted to curl that season. It is pretty hard to turn down an
Olympic athlete that is willing to take you onto his team. I curled in Eau
Claire for a year and a half before transferring from UW-Eau Claire to UW-Madison. I curled for one year there before taking three years off because
of internships that had me living in California and Texas. After graduating
in the spring of 2004 I moved to Houston for my job and the forseeable
future so it was time to begin curling again."
Curling family: "I am the only member of my immediate
family who curls, although I do have a couple of distant relatives who curl
(Cory Ward is my third cousin and Grandma keeps telling me that I had
another cousin that curled awhile back."
Hobbies: "I spend most of my free time playing sports
(volleyball, basketball, tennis). I also enjoy going out and enjoying
downtown Houston. "
Curling goals: "My curling goals are more related to
the Houston Curling Club than directly to myself. I would really like to see
the club expand its membership significantly and expand to two leagues a
week instead of just one. I would also love to see year-round curling here in
Houston, which is possible with our year-round ice. It would be great for
curling to expand and tap into the club growth potential of such a large
city."
