CURLING HIGHLIGHTS

Other highlights include:

PERSONAL FILE
Andy Borland comes from a curling family. Both of his parents curl, and a brother and sister have also curled competitively in recent years. His wife, Kristi, is a curler, too. One of his favorite memories involving the sport is getting to play in the Last Chance International Bonspiel in Hibbing, Minn. on a team with his brother, his father, and his grandfather.

In his own words: "I have been interested in curling since I was four years old. I used to watch my parents play when we lived in Marmora, Ontario. I started curling when I was in grade 6, and have played ever since."

What I enjoy most about curling: "As a skip, I enjoy the pressure that a skip has, in that the skip has to make shots in the face of giving up huge ends, and must find a way to keep his team in the game in the face of long odds."

Nickname: Super-sweeper

Curls out of: Hibbing (Minn.) Curling Club

Personal strength in curling: "I believe my personal strength in curling is that I always think I have a chance to win even when things look bleak. Teams I have been on have had some incredible comebacks over the years in bonspiels and other competitions, which always gives me hope."

Other favorite sports: "When I'm not curling or working (mainly family law), I do try to play golf in the summer."

Other pasttimes: "Playing with my two sons John and Mark, and my wife, Kristi".

Fantastic or unusual events: "I played and beat former Boston Celtic Kevin McHale in the Northwest Invitational Golf Tournament (held in Hibbing each year). I played him a few years ago. I also got to be a moderator for a debate featuring now Governor Jesse Ventura when he was running for governor in the fall of 1998."

What I'd like the world to know about curling: "1)Anyone can beat anyone else. 2) Curling is a lifetime sport."
