  • Level I instructor clinic set in Pittsburgh

     

    A level I instructor clinic is slated from 3-10 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center in Pittsburgh, Penn. Cost is $25 (includes USCA fee plus a meal). Junior clinic planned in Seattle

 

A curling clinic for junior curlers (ages 9 to 20) will be held Oct. 1-2 at the Granite Curling Club in Seattle. The clinic is open to any junior curler interested in improving their curling skills. The clinic will be taught by Lynita Delaney, USCA Junior Athlete Development Director, with help from James Pleasants and other instructors from the Granite Curling Club. There will be two levels of instruction depending on experience level. The advanced level ($15 per curler) will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Oct. 2. Instruction for new curlers will be on Saturday only and will cost $10. To register for this clinic, or for more information, please contact James Pleasants at 206-789-6292.   • 2006 Paralympic Team Coach applications due Wednesday

     

    The USCA is seeking applicants for the position of coach for the 2006 Paralympic Team. For further details, please click here to review the Selection Procedure. The 2006 Paralympic Coach Selection Procedure is pending final USOC approval. Candidates shall submit their names and credentials with a letter describing why they are qualified for the position to the USCA Chief Operating Officer by the application deadline of Aug. 24, 2005.

    Officiating clinic planned in October in Eveleth

    St. Paul Cashspiel moves to October

     

    The St. Paul Cashspiel will take place Oct. 14-17 in St. Paul, Minn. Based on participant feedback, this event, traditionally held Thanksgiving weekend, has been moved to mid October to accommodate a triple knock-out format. The event will begin on Friday, October 14 with the championship round being played on Monday, October 17. Registration materials will be posted on the USCA and St. Paul websites in the next few weeks.

     

  • Early ice locations sought

    The USCA is seeking sites to provide competitive athletes and other curlers with early training ice. We will be looking for locations that will provide the most convenient access to our competitive athletes. Read more here.

     

  • U.S. citizenship must be established by World Trials entry deadline

    The list of U.S. citizen curlers below is based on documents submitted by playdown entrants for the 2005 Trials playdown process. The USCA will not require additional proof of citizenship from athletes on this list for any further playdown entry forms. The athlete's club is identified to distinguish between curlers with the same name. Athletes who believe they should be included on the list, or in cases of uncertainty as to whose name is on the list, should call the USCA office at 1-888-287-5377. View the list here.

    At its meeting June 22, 2005, the USCA Executive Committee established a rule regarding timing for U.S. citizenship eligibility for Trials playdowns: Eligibility for World Team Trials requires U.S. citizenship at the time of the registration deadline for the Trials process. The entry deadline for the 2006 Trials playdowns is set for Nov. 15, 2005. The new rule will be applied annually and eliminates the "on-track" designation.

  • Apply now for training & competition grant


    The USOC is currently accepting grant applications for the William E. Simon Olympic Trust for the Support of Athletes. Those eligible must be U.S. citizens, currently in training and competition, and demonstrate financial need in order to continue training. Applications can be obtained by contacting Jennifer Culver at the USCA national office or by calling her at 1-888-287-5377.

    Member Services conference on tap

     

    The USCA's annual Member Services conference will take place July 14-15 in Bismarck, N.D., in conjunction with the Bismarck summerspiel.   • Canada rises to the gold
    at Men's World Championship

    Canada's Randy Ferbey rink won its third gold in four years by beating Scotland at the 2005 Men's World Championship in Victoria, B.C. Germany took home the bronze. Press release. USA's Pete Fenson rink finished tied for first in the round robin with five other teams, but lost a tiebreaker game against Norway for the playoffs. Press release. Fenson's team did secure the U.S. berth at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games, and it is his team that will represent USA there.

  • Washington's Richard rink wins Pacific International Bonspiel

     

    The team of Nancy Richard, Clare Cloutier, Leslie Frosch, Doreen Deaver and Miyo Konno won the women's division at the Pacific International Bonspiel in Richmond, British Columbia, by defeating a hometown team, 4-3, in the gold-medal final. This was the first time a U.S. women's team won the event.

     

  • USOC offering leadership camp

     

    Curlers are encouraged to apply to attend the 2005 United States Olympic Committee's leadership camp. Two sessions will be held this summer at Ithaca College in Ithaca, N.Y. The leadership camp will take place June 11-14 and a symposium will be held July 14-16. Registration fees, which include dormitory housing and meals, session material and social functions, are $500. Cost for the symposium only is $250. The application deadline is April 15. Contact Curt Hamakawa at the USOC for more information at 719-866-4532. The leadership camp is intended primarily for those interested in gaining a better understanding of Olympism and expanding their capacity for leadership in the Olympic movement.     USCA Controller Sandy Robinson notes that some teams have not yet submitted their Travel Stipend request forms for the following events: Olympic/World Trials, Men's & Women's National Championships, and the Mixed National Championship. Teams are urged to submit these forms as soon as possible -- blank forms are available online. Unless the team specifies otherwise, individual checks will be made out to each team member.     Sweden’s Anette Norberg rink finally completed its medal collection by grabbing the previously elusive gold after defeating Cassie Johnson's rink from USA this afternoon at the 2005 World Women's Championship.  Press release.  At the 2005 Senior World Championships, the David Russell rink won the silver medal, losing 5-4 to Canada in the final.   • U.S. teams at Optimist International U-18 championship

     

    U.S. junior teams skipped by Mathew Thomas (Washington), Jerod Roland (North Dakota), Amanda Kitchens (North Dakota, Aanders Brorson (Minnesota), Katie Bland (Wisconsin), Richard Smith (Massachusetts) and Monica Walker (Massachusetts) competed in the 2005 Optimist International U-18 championship over the weekend at the Calgary Curling Club. Bland's Wisconsin rink and the Thomas rink of Washington both placed fourth in their respective divisions -- the highest U.S. finishes.

    The Pete Fenson rink lost to the Glenn Howard rink of Canada, 9-7, in the quarterfinals of the 2005 PharmAssist Players' Championship, in St. John's, Newfoundland. Fenson's team earned $10,000 CDN at the event.

Scotland's Logan Gray rink defeated USA's Kris Perkovich team in the men's bronze medal game of the 2005 World Junior Curling Championships in Pinerolo, Italy. Press release. The USCA Executive Committee has approved Abuse and Harassment guidelines for USCA staff, athletes and volunteers at all USCA events.   • Team USA finishes 8th; qualifies for 2006 Paralympics

 

Team USA lost to Korea 6-3 to determine the 7th and 8th place rankings Saturday morning at the 2005 World Wheelchair Curling Championship at the Braehead Curling Club in Glasgow, Scotland. Team USA qualified the USA for the 2006 Paralympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy.

    Todhunter elected AAC rep to USOC

     

    Bill Todhunter has been elected USCA athlete representative to the U.S. Olympic Committee's Athletes Advisory Council. Four athletes were candidates to succeed outgoing rep Ann Swisshelm Silver. The term is four years. Eligible voters were athletes who had competed at World Championship or Olympic competition in the past 10 season (1995-2004). Voter eligibility is defined under the U.S. Olympic and Amateur Sports Act. The new Alternate USCA USOC AAC rep is Nicole Joraanstad. USOC AAC rules specify that the alternate rep must be of opposite gender to the rep.

    North America wins Continental Cup rubber match

    (MEDICINE HAT, Alberta, Canada) – No matter what the currency or exchange rate—loonies, dollars, euros—those attending the 2004 Continental Cup of Curling got their money’s worth this afternoon at the grand finale. The record books will show that Randy Ferbey’s Canadian rink defeated Sweden’s Peja Lindholm team 47-13 in the men’s 60-point final, thereby giving North America a 228-172 victory overall.     "Curling Ice Explained," the World Curling Federation's ice manual, can be ordered by contacting Bev Schroeder at the USCA office at 1-888-CURLERS (287-5377). "Curling Ice Explained" is a comprehensive manual for the purpose of producing good curling ice on a scientific basis and was written by Leif Ohman of Sweden. The cost for the manual is $70 plus shipping and handling.

     

  • USCA Liability Insurance Program changes


    The USCA liability insurance program, in which about 55 USCA member
    clubs participate, has several changes in the renewal offer for the policy year starting Aug. 19, 2004. In August, the office emailed participating club insurance contacts with details. Since that time, I've received two inquiries from club folks who were not aware of the renewal details for their clubs. As a result, this notice is posted as a second way to reach all interested clubs. If your club has not received insurance renewal details, contact me at david_garber@charter.net. Or, if your club is interested in reviewing the USCA liability insurance program for possible participation, contact me for details.

     

    Omaha back in business

     

    The Aksarben Curling Association in Omaha, Neb., has announced that it will be back on the ice this season with a new rental agreement with the Mid-America Center. The AKCA has planned two free Open Houses, from 6-9 p.m. Oct. 6 and Oct. 20. A 15-week season is also being set up, from November through March, with three draws every Wednesday night.   • WADA prohibited list released; USADA drug reference information now online


    The World Anti-Doping Prohibited List (to come into effect Jan. 1, 2005) is now available online at www.wada-ama.org along with a Summary of Modification for 2005 and the 2005 Monitoring Program. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency will provide the status of pharmaceuticals from the WADA 2004 Prohibited List. Learn more here.
