North Dakota's Legacie named USA Curling's chief ice technician
(STEVENS POINT, Wis) -
Garland Legacie of Edmore, N.D., has been named the chief
ice technician for the United States Curling Association.
As USCA ice technician, Legacie is responsible for creating championship ice for
national championships and assisting with the USCA's icemaking program.
"I would like to continue to keep learning as much as I can about making ice and
share the information with all the icemakers that I work with," Legacie said.
Legacie is a certified Level I World Curling Federation icemaker. He has made
ice for 15 North Dakota state championships, more than 50 bonspiels, eight
national championships and one world championship. Legacie replaces Dennis
Tietge of Wausau, Wis., who held the position since 2002.
"I would like to be able to provide championship ice that regular league curlers
will be able to experience also," Legacie said. "I would like to thank all the
people that have supported me in reaching this goal. I hope to become a familiar
face to all the curlers in the nation. I look forward to learning from other ice
techs and sharing ideas. I would also like to thank the USCA for giving me this
chance to help out other icemakers."
In addition, Legacie hopes to create an icemaking DVD to distribute to all USCA
clubs with a basic formula for preparing and maintaining ice.
As an athlete, Legacie won the 2001 U.S. Mixed National title, playing in the
second position on a team that also featured his wife, Jan. He also has competed
at several other national, state and club-level championships.
"I've lost a few games in competition because of ice," Legacie said. "We'll try
to make the ice as flawless and boring as possible so the competitors only have
to worry about their shots."
When he's not making ice, Legacie is busy farming with his brother, Jim, and
spending time with his wife and three children - Jade, Jesa and Brooke.
USA Curling is sponsored by AIT Worldwide Logistics, AmerAust Technologies,
Hilton and Nike as well as by AT&T, General Motors, The Home Depot, and Bank of
America through a joint marketing program with the U.S. Olympic Committee.
